세계에서 가장 긴 도로터널은 노르웨이의 수도 오슬로(Oslo)로 연결되는
라에달(Laerdal) 터널로, 1995년에 공사를 시작하여 2001년 개통되었다.
이 터널은 노르웨이의 제 2도시인 베르겐(Bergen) 과 오란드(Aurland)를 연결하는 길이 24.5km로 하루 통행량 약 7,000대의 차량이 통과할 수 있으며, 9억 7천 6백만 노르웨이 크로네(Kr)의 공사비가 들었다고 한다.
한편 2000년판 기네스북에는  스위스 괴세넨(Goschenen)에서 아이롤로(Airolo)에 이르는 2차선 세인트 코타드(St. Gottard) 도로 터널은 길이가 16.32km로 1980년 9월 5일부터 통행이 시작되었다.
1969년 시작된 이 공사에는 총 4억2천만달러의 공사비가 들었으며 19명의 인부가 목숨을 잃었다.
