1마일(1.609km) 기준 최고 육상속도 기록은 시속 1,227.985km로 1997년 10월 15일, 미국 네바다주 블랙락(Black Rock)사막에서 스러스트(Thrust)사가 제작한 소닉카(SSC)를 주행한 앤디 그린(영국)이 세웠다. 그가 사용한 차에는 22.68톤 11만마력의 추력을 내는 2개의 롤스로이스 Spey 205제트엔진이 장착되어 있었다.  

여자부문에서는 키티 햄블톤(미국)이 1976년 12월 6일, 미국 오하이오주 알바드 사막에서 바퀴가 3개 달린 로켓 추진용 SM1 모터베이터(Motorvator)를 타고 시속 843.323km로 달려 최고 기록을 세웠다. 햄블톤의 왕복 공식 기록은 시속 825.126km 였는데, 순간속도가 시속 965km까지 이르렀다.  
육상 속도 기록이 정식으로 인정받기 위해선 2번 기록을 재야한다. 즉, 먼저 정해진 코스까지 달렸다가 다시 출발점으로 돌아와야 한다.

In the women's sector, Kitty Hambleton of the United States set a record on December 6, 1976 in the Albad Desert of Ohio, U.S., on a three-wheeled rocket powered by SM1 Motorvator. Hambleton's official record was 825.126 kilometers per hour, with instantaneous speeds reaching 965 kilometers per hour. 
For the land speed record to be officially recognized, two records must be taken. That is, you must first run to the designated course and then return to the starting point.
