양산차로 달성된 최고속도는 시속 386.7km로 98년 3월31일 독일 볼프스부르크에 자리잡은 폴크스바겐 실험장에서 영국인 앤드 월러스가 맥라렌 F1으로 달성했다.
멕라렌은 80년대 후반 전성기를 누렸던 F1의 명문팀으로 맥라렌 F1은 천재적인 경주차 디자이너 고든 머레이가 8명의 스텝들과 함께 F1의 기술을 총동원하여 만들었다. 엔진은 627마력을 내는 V12 6600cc DOHC로 BMW에서 제작했다.
그 뒤를 이어 부가티 EB110SS가 12기통 3500cc, 611마력, DOHC 터보 엔진을 탑재하고 시속 355km를 달성했다. EB110SS(Super Sports)는 92년 제네바 오토쇼에 데뷔하여 많은 자동차 전문가들로부터 호평을 받았지만 조그만 짐 하나도 놓을 수 없을 정도로 지나치게 스포츠성만 강조한 실내 디자인과 과도한 투자로 부가티의 2번째 몰락을 초래한 모델이 되었다.
최초로 시속 300km의 벽을 돌파한 재규어 XJ220이 500마력을 내는 V12 6.2리터 DOHC엔진을 탑재한 4륜구동차로 시속 352km를 기록하였고 포르쉐 911이 배기량 3400cc 496마력,시속 336km로 뒤를 잇고 있다.
그 다음으로는 이태리 페라리 F40으로 8기통 3000cc 478마력으로 324km를 기록하였다. 
그러면 세계 최고의 자동차경주인 F1에서는 최고속도가 얼마나 나올까? 정확한 기록은 없지만 순간 최고속도가 시속 290마일(460km/h)까지 나온다고 한다.
