1888년 8월 칼 벤츠가 독일 뮌헨에서 열렸던 산업박람회을 구경하기 위해 집을 비운 사이, 부인 베르타 링게(자동차의 어머니라 불리움)는 그의 두아들의 간청에 못이겨 자동차를 몰고 100km나 떨어진 외가로 향했다.
험한 시골길을 달리는 동안 자동차는 여기저기 부서져 나갔고, 베르타 링게는 이를 고쳐가며 하루종일 차를 몰아 기름과 먼지투성이가 된채 외가에 도착 했다.
이튿날, 전보로 이 소식을 전해들은 칼 벤츠는 자동차가 다 망가졌으리라는 생각에 화가 머리 끝까지 나서 처가로 달려 갔다. 그러나 생각과는 달리 자동차는 크게 부서지지는 않았으며. 감히 생각지도 못했던 장거리 로드 테스트를 연약한 여자와 아이들이 해냈다는 사실, 그리고 자동차가 치명적인 고장 없이 그 먼거리를 끝까지 달려 주었다는 사실에 용기를 얻었다.  

When Karl Benz was absent from home to watch the trade show held in Munich, Germany in August 1888, his wife, Vertaringe (called the mother of cars), drove away from him and pleaded with his mother to drive home.
Cars were broken off on rough country roads, and Vertaringe spent the day fixing them and driving on his mother's side, oily and dusty.
The next day, upon hearing of the news via wire, Karl Benz was mad enough to see that the car had been damaged, so he ran to his wife's house. But the car didn't break as I thought it would. Courage was encouraged by the fact that the weak women and children had done the unexpected long road test, and the fact that the car had driven the long distance with no fatal harm.
