최초의 장애인용 자동차는 1906년 미국 디트로이트에서 탄생했다. 전기자동차를 만들어 팔던 퇴역 육군대령 하트 포프가 소아마비로 보행이 불편한 자기 아들을 위해 손으로 조정할 수 있는 전기자동차를 만들어 주었다. 1년 후 디트로이트의 지체부자유자 요양원에서 이 차를 보고 포프에게 20대를 주문하여 비로소 실용화하게 되었다.
제32대 미국 대통령 프랭클린 루즈벨트는 39세 때 류머티즘을 심하게 앓아 두 다리를 못쓰자 손으로만 운전할 수 있는 장애인용 자동차를 만들어 손수 운전하고 다닌 최초의 대통령이었다. 루즈벨트 대통령은 뉴욕주지사 시절인 1928년 포드차를 구입하여 브레이크, 클러치, 액셀러레이터를 전부 손으로 조작할 수 있도록 개조한 것이 세계 최초의 장애인용 휘발유 자동차라고 한다.
두 팔과 두 다리를 전부 쓰지 못하는 장애인용 자동차는 1979년 프랑스에서 한 처녀 과학자가 자기 아버지를 위해 연구한 것이었다. 카탈라박사는 컴퓨터 두뇌를 만들어 장착한 자동차 인간을 개발했는데, 구두 지시로 움직이는 이 차는 시험결과 기술적인 문제점이 많아 실용화되지는 못했으나 미래를 위한 전천후형 장애인 자동차로 안성맞춤이어서 계속 연구중이라고 한다.
