1897년 10월 17일부터 1주일 동안 런던 남서지역 우체국들 사이의 4.4km를 시험 주행한 영국 브리티시 모터 신디케이트사의 다임러 모터밴이 최초의 우편자동차다. 약 400kg이나 되는 편지 뭉치를 싣고 하루에 5번 왕복했다. 1년 후인 1898년 6월 17일, 영국 체신성은 웨스트 오브 스코틀랜드 모터사의 다임러 웨고네트를 한 대 구입해 세계 최초로 정식 우편자동차로 썼다. 이 차는 스코틀랜드의 인베라와 아드리쉐이그 사이의 42km를 운행했고 평균시속은 13.6km, 소요시간은 3시간이었다.

She sent and received five rounds of letters each day carrying a bundle of about 400 kilograms. A year later, on June 17, 1898, the United Kingdom Department of Communications purchased a Daimler Wegonet from the West of Scotland Motor Company and used it as the world's first official mail vehicle. The car ran 42 kilometers per hour between Inverra and Adreishaig in Scotland, averaging 13.6 kilometers per hour and taking three hours.
