택시는 1896년 미국 뉴욕에서 처음 등장했다. 아메리칸 전기자동차회사가 200여 대의 전기 승용차를 만들어 마차 대신 영업했는데 조용하고 냄새가 나지 않고 운전이 쉬워 인기를 끌었다.  그 후 사람들은 이 전기택시를 "거리의 자동차"란 뜻을 가진 리무진 드빌(Limousine deville)이라 불렀다. 휘발유 엔진을 얹은 택시는 1898년 독일의 슈투트가르트에 처음 등장한 4인승 다임러로 2기통 9마력 엔진을 얹고 시속 40km로 달렸다.
 

Taxi first appeared in New York, the United States in 1896. The American Electric Vehicle Company, which made 200 electric cars and operated instead of a wagon, was popular because it was quiet, free from smells and easy to drive.  Then people called the electric taxi a Limousine Deville, which means " a street car. " A gasoline-powered taxi was a four-seater dimerer first appeared at Stuttgart in 1898, Germany, running at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour with a two-cylinder, nine-power, nine-horsepower engine.
