백미러가 최초로 선보인 것은 1911년이다. 정확하게 본다면 인사이드 미러(Inside Mirror)이다.
미국에서 가장 전통깊고 인기좋은 자동차 경주는 인디아나폴리스시에서 1911년에 생겨난 인디 500마일(800km) 논스톱 트랙경기이다. 인디500레이스가 생겨날 당시의 레이스 카들은 반드시 정비사가 동승해야 하는 2인승 레이스카였다. 동승한 정비사는 달리다가 생기는 고장을 고치는 의무와 함께 뒤쪽의 상황을 운전자에게 알려주는 인간 백밀러의 역할도 겸했었다.

당시 별로 알려지지 않았던 마몬이라는 자동차회사의 기술부장인 레이 하룬은 자기가 직접 설계해 만든 레이스카를 몰고 지방레이스에 자주 출전하여 우승을 여러 번 해 꽤 알려진 레이서였다. 하지만 목숨을 걸어야 하는 자동차 경주의 위험을 알고 은퇴하여 한사람의 엔지니어로 평범한 삶을 즐기려던 때인 1911년 인디500 제 1회 레이스가 열렸다.
대회측은 이 새로운 레이스를 미국의 전통적인 자동차 스포츠로 만들기 위해, 당시로서는 거액인 1만달러의 상금을 걸면서 무제한이던 엔진의 배기량을 1만cc 이하로 제한하고, 차의 무게도 1천kg 이하로 낮추었다.

레이 하룬은 거액의 상금과 새로운 레이스카 규정에 매혹되어 다시 레이스를 하기로 마음을 바꾸었다. 그는 곧 인디500의 새로운 레이스카 조건에 맞는 차를 설계하였다. 8천 200cc짜리 엔진을 얹고 세계 최초의 알루미늄 휠 디스크를 단 로켓을 닮은 독특한 스타일의 1인승 레이스카였다.
차의 무게를 줄이기 위해 정비사를 태우지 않는 대신 인간 백미러의 역할을 무엇으로 대신할까 곰곰히 생각하다가 어느날 아내의 화장거울에서 힌트를 얻어 작은 거울을 차 앞에 단 것이 세계 최초의 백미러였다.

그는 8cmX20cm 규격의 네모난 거울을 운전대 앞 가운데에 장치하여 경기 도중 후속 추격차의 상황을 판단했다. 제 1회 인디 500 레이스에서 그는 약 5km의 트랙을 논스톱으로 800km 도는 데 백미러의 덕을 톡톡히 보아 드디어 우승의 영광을 차지해 더욱 유명해졌다.
이 레이스카는 레이 하룬을 일약 스타덤에 올려놓았고, 오늘날 레이스카의 시조가 되었다.
