세계 최초의 앰뷸런스는 1895년 12월 프랑스 파리에서 열렸던 산업박람회에 처음 출품되었다. 이 앰뷸런스는 5년 뒤인 1909년 프랑스 육군에서 처음 사용했고, 이어 민간병원으로 팔려나갔다. 첫 앰뷸런스는 엔진이 달린 견인차와 트레일러 두 대가 연결된 구급차였는데, 앞차에는 의사와 운전사가 타고 뒷차에는 침대를 얹는 환자를 태우도록 만들어진 구급차였다.
 

The world's first ambulance was first submitted to an industry fair in Paris, France in December 1895. Five years later, the ambulance was first used by the French Army in 1909, and was subsequently sold to a private hospital.
