독일의 다임러와 벤츠가 1886년에 발명한 자동차는 자전거 핸들을 달고 있었다. 그로부터 10년 후 영국의 자전거 기술자 드레이크가 앞차축이 통째로 돌아가는 피벗식 핸들을 발명했으나 쿠션이 나빠서 잘 망가졌다. 양쪽 앞바퀴만 방향을 바꿀 수 있는 현대식 핸들장치는 1898년 독일의 링켄 스피겔이 착안했다. 늦은 봄날 오후 부인과 피크닉을 갔다가 돌아가는 물레방아의 기어에 의해 위아래로 움직이는 절구를 보고 아이디어를 얻어 설계했으나 너무 가난해서 특허를 따지 못했다. 돈이 없어 책을 외상으로 사다 읽던 그는 책방 주인으로부터 밀린 책값 독촉을 받자 돈 대신 이 핸들의 설계도면을 책방 주인 루돌프 에커만에게 주고 말았다. 얼마 후 이 설계의 가치성을 발견한 책방 주인 에커만은 자기의 이름으로 특허를 받아 제작권을 팔아 버렸다. 이 핸들이 바로 에커만식 핸들이라 불리는 것으로 현재 자동차 핸들의 시조가 되었다. 그러나, 둥근 바퀴형 핸들이 아니었고 바퀴 양쪽 안에다 끈을 달아 자전거 핸들 모양의 쇠막대기에다 연결하여 방향을
바꾸던 것을 프랑스 기술자 장토가 둥근 핸들로 바꾸었다. 이 당시 핸들은 기계적인 힘을 이용해서 동작하는 기계식 핸들이었다. 기계식 핸들은 사람의 힘으로 돌려야 하므로 상대적으로 무거운 차일수록 운전자는 보다 많은 힘을 써야 했다. 이러한 기계식 핸들은 반자동식 핸들이 등장하면서 핸들의 역사에서 점차 사라지게 된다. 반자동식은 1946년 벤츠회사가 개발한 유압식 자동문의 원리를 이용해 1952년 미국의 크라이슬러 자동차회사가 파워 스티어링이라는 반자동식 핸들을 만들어냈다.
 

The car that German dimers and Benz invented in 1886, was equipped with a bicycle handle. Ten years later, British bicycle technician Drake invented a pivet handle with a full front axle, but it was badly cushioned and twisted. The modern handle system, which enables the two front wheels to change direction, was first introduced by Rinken Spiegel of Germany in 1898. Having been on credit for his short money, he was asked to pay for the book to the bookstore's owner Rudolf Eckerman for the blueprints on the steering wheel. Soon after, Eckerman, the bookstore's owner, found the value of the design, patented and sold the work rights. This is what is called the Eckermann steering wheel, and is now the founder of automobile handles. However, it was not a round wheel handle, so it was possible to attach a strap inside each wheel and attach it to an iron bicycle handle, so it could be oriented.
The change was made with a round handle by a French engineer. Handles at this time were mechanical handles powered by mechanical force. Mechanical handles were to be turned on a human basis, requiring the driver to exert more effort the heavier the blind was. These mechanical handles gradually fade from the history of the handle, with the advent of the semi-automatic handle. Using the principle of the hydraulic automatic doors developed by the Benz company in 1946, the U.S. company of Chrysler in 1952 invented an anti-automatic handle called a power steering.
