1885년 독일의 칼.벤츠(Karl Benz)는 가솔린 3륜 자동차를 발명하고 만하임에서 시운전을 하였으며, 그 다음해인 1886년 특허를 획득하였다(특허번로 37,435호).  이 차는 무게 250kg의 자전거타입 삼륜차로 200prm에서 0.85마력의 힘을 내는 1기통 4엔진을 얹고 최고 시속 16km를 냈다. 첫해에 만든 두 대중 한 대는 뮌헨의 도이치 박물관에 아직도 달릴 수 있는 상태로 보관되어 있다.
칼 벤츠는 다임러와 거의 동시에 가솔린 자동차를 발명하였으나 가솔린 엔진 제작에 있어 다임러 보다 앞선 1879년에 이미 제작한 바 있기 때문에 칼 벤츠의 자동차를 최초의 휘발유 자동차로 보는 견해들이 지배적이다. 

German car Karl Benz (the Karl Benz) invented a gasoline three-wheeled car and conducted a test drive from Mannheim in 1885 ; the following year his patent was granted in 1886, with a capacity of 0.85, a 200-kilometer, 200-kilometer bicycle powered by a special car. One of the two cars from the first year is still kept running at the Deutsche Museum in Munich.
Karl Benz invented the gasoline car about the same time as the Dimer, but since gasoline engine cars were built in 1879 before the Dimer, the first cars control cars were gasoline.
