1911년 미국 캐딜락사의 찰스 케터링은 최초로 자동 시동기를 개발 하였다. 자동 시동기가 생기게된 일화는 다음과 같다.
1907년 겨울 한 여인이 캐딜락을 몰고 가다가 디트로이트의 어느 다리에서 엔진이 꺼져 낭패를 겪고 있었다.
시동기를 돌려 시동을 걸 수가 없었기 때문이다. 이 때 어떤 남자가 차를 몰고 그 옆을 자나다 여인을 돕기 위해 차에서 내렸다. 그 남자가 시동기 쇠막대를 힘차게 돌 리는 순간 엔진이 역회전하면서 쇠막대기가 튀어나와 그남자의 머리를 강타했고, 그로 인해 그 남자는 며칠후 숨을 거두었다.
그 남자가 다름아닌 캐딜락자동차회사의 사장 핸리 릴랜드의 절친한 친구 였다.
핸리 릴랜드는 자기가 만든차 때문에 친구가 죽었다는 죄책감에 빠졌으나 얼마후 엔진니어들에게 쇠막대 없이 시동을 걸 수 있는 방법을 최대한 빨리 찾아내라고 엄명을 내렸다.
캐딜락의 엔지니어들은 다방면으로 노력했으나 그 방법을 찾을 수 없자 결국 당시 전기의 대가였던 찰 수 케더링에게 부탁 하였고, 1911년 드디어 전기로 시동이 걸리는 자동 시동기를 발명하게 되었다.
 

In 1911, Charles Kettering of Cadillac America developed the first automatic starter. The anecdote from which an automatic starter was created is as follows.
In the winter of 1907, a woman was driving to a Cadillac when her engine was turned off on a bridge in Detroit.
They could not start the car by turning the starter. Then a man drove by and walked out of the car to help the woman. As the man pushed hard on the starter iron rod, the engine reversed and the iron bar smashed into the man's head, which caused the man to die a few days later.
The man was none other than a close friend of Henry Lilland, president of the Cadillac Motor Company.
Henry Lilland was guilty of the death of a friend because of his car, but later he ordered his engine seniors to figure out how to get started without an iron rod as soon as possible.
The engineers at Cadillac had tried various ways, but could not find a way, so they finally asked charley cathering, who was the king of electricity at the time, to invent an automatic starter that started from electricity in 1911.
