윈도우 와이퍼는 1903년 평범한 가정주부인 마리 앤더슨 부인에 의해 처음 발명되었는데, 미국 엘라바마주 버밍험에 살던 마리 앤더슨 부인은 비가 퍼붓는날 전차를 탔다가 몰아치는 빗줄기에 쩔쩔매는 전차 운전수를 보고 '비를 닦아주는 장치가 있다면 얼마나 편할까'라는 생각을 가지게 되었다.  그러던 어느날 마당을 쓸다가 손에 쥔 빗자루를 보고 아이디어를 얻어 몇 달간의 연구끝에 마침내 지금의 형태와 비슷한 최초의 '수동식 윈도우 와이퍼'를 발명, 특허를 받았다.
그러나, 앤더슨 부인이 만든 윈도우 와이퍼는 빗자루를 이용한 간단한 도구로 차 내에서 손으로 돌려 닦는 그야말로 완전 수동식이었고, 실용화 하는데에는 실패했다.
그 후,1919년에 포드자동차의 한 엔지니어가 이것을 처음으로 실용화시켰지만 운전자가 직접 와이퍼를 손으로 돌리거나 조수석에 탄 사람이 레버를 움직여 주는 방식에서 벗어나지는 못했다.
한편, 자동 와이퍼 모터는 1929년 미국 포드 링컨에 진공 모터식으로 된 자동 와이퍼를 장착하였으나, 반자동이었고 시동이 꺼지면 압축공기를 만들지 못해 작동되지 않는 단점이 있었다.
지금의 전기모터식 와이퍼가 탄생된 것은 1936년으로 GM의 기술진이 엔진이 꺼져도 배터리 전지로 움직이는 와이퍼를 캐딜락에 처음으로 적용시켜 큰 인기를 모았으며 1950년에는 윈도 워셔가 개발되어 차량에 장착되었다. 

The first windshield wiper was invented in 1903 by a normal stay-at-home mom, Marie Anderson.  One day he saw a broom he was sweeping his yard and got an idea for a few months of research, and finally received a patent for the first ' manual windshield wiper ', similar to what it is today.
However, Mrs. Anderson's window wiper was simply a completely passive hand wiping in the car with a simple tool using the broom, and failed to make it work.
Then, in 1919, an engineer at Ford's car made it practical for the first time, but the driver could not turn the wipers by hand or let the passenger move the lever.
On the other hand, the automatic wiper motor was fitted with vacuum motorized automatic wipers in Ford Lincoln in 1929, but was semi-automatic and could not operate with compressed air when the engine was switched off.
The first electric motorized wiper was invented in 1936, when GM engineers applied a battery-powered wiper to the Cadillac after the engine was switched off, and Windows washers were developed in 1950.
