1894년 7월 세계 최초의 자동차 경주대회가 프랑스의 『프티 주르날』신문사의 주최로 파리-루앙(126km)에서 개최되었다.
총 102대 신청자중 두 번의 예선에서 81대가 탈락하고 21대만이 본선에 진출 했다.
7월22일 일요일 아침 8시 정각부터 30초 간격으로 파리의 포트마이요가를 출발하여 세느강변을 따라 루앙을 향해 달리기 시작 했다.
예상 했던 것처럼 출발에서부터 해프닝이 벌어 졌는데, 어떤 프랑스의 증기차는 공원 블럭을 모조리 부수고 핸들이 고장나 잔디밭으로 들어가는가 하면, 어떤차는 인도위에 진열된 식탁들을 넘어뜨리고 레스토랑안으로, 어떤차는 바퀴가 빠져 길가던 마차를 들어 받는등 전 코스의 4분의1도 못가서 도중하차하는 차들이 속출했다.
이 경주에서는 드디옹 백작이 운전한 드디옹-부통 증기자동차가 출발한 지 10시간47분만에 평균시속 11km 속도로 1착을 하였다.
그러나 뒤에 트레일러를 달고 달렸다는 이유로 대회 규칙을 위반했다고 해서 실격되고 말았다.
결국 다임러기관을 탑재하고,2등으로 골인한 푸조와 파나르 르바소 차가 공동우승을 차지하며 5천 프랑을 나눠 가지게 되었다.
