1874년 가을, 오스트리아에서 유대인인 지그프리드 말커스 (Siegfried Marcus)가 4년간의 연구끝에 벤젠을 연료로한 엔진 출력 0.75마력의 자동차를 개발 하였다.
이차는 평균 시속이 6.4km였으며, 스프링,클러치,브레이크까지 장착 했지만 불행히도 배기파이프와 소음기를 발명하지 못해 소음이 심했다.
