1895년 프랑스의 앙드레 미쉐린(Andre Michelin)과 에드알드 미쉐린(Edouard Michelin) 형제는 자동차용 공기 타이어를 개발 하였다.
공기 튜브가 들어있는 고무 타이어는 자전거에 먼저 적용되었다. 1888년 스코틀랜드에 살았던 윌리엄 던롭이 아들의 나무바퀴 세발자전거에다 짐승의 허파를 넣은 튜브식 가죽타이어를 만들어 달아본 결과 쿠션이 매우 좋은 것을 보고 특허를 받았다. 얼마 후 하베이라는 귀족이 던롭의 특허를 양도받아 고무타이어로 개발하여 자전거에 달았으나 자동차까지는 생각하지 못했다. 1895년 프랑스 파리에 살던 에드알도 미쉐린에게 한 영국청년이 공기 타이어를 단 자전거를 고치러 왔다. 미쉐린은 쿠션이 너무 좋은 이 타이어를 보고 당시 자동차들이 통고무 타이어를 장착해서 딱딱하고 쿠션이 나쁘다는 점에
주목하게 된다. 그는 곧 자전거 타이어를 본 떠서 공기 튜브식 자동차 타이어를 만들었다. 세계 최초의 자동차용 공기 타이어가 탄생한 것이다.
미쉐린은 타이어를 곧 친구의 푸조 차에 끼우고 때마침 파리-보르도 간 560Km 자동차 경주에 출전했는데 무려 22번이나 타이어가 찢어져 나중에는 할 수 없이 풀잎을 채워 넣고 달렸다

Rubber tires with tubes were first applied to bicycles. William Dunlop, who lived in Scotland, tried a tube leather tire with an animal lung on his son's treewheel tricycle and bought a patent in 1888, for having a good cushion. Shortly afterward, an aristocrat signed Dunlop's patent and built it into rubber tires, but he could not think of a car. In 1895, a young British man came to the Paris, France, to fix a bicycle with an air tire. Michelin saw this one that had a good cushions, and when they saw it, cars would have to wear a whole-rubber tire to make sure it was hard and had a bad cushion.
Get one's attention He soon saw a bicycle tire and made an air tube car tire. The world's first car air tires were born.
Michelin soon got the tire into her friend's Peugeot car and ran just in the nick of time, breaking 22 kilometers between Paris and Bordeaux and then running with a blade of grass on it.
