세계 최초의 주유소는 미국 미조리주 세인트루이스에 설립된 오토모빌 휘발유회사가 1905년에 만든 것이었는데, 당시만해도 주유기가 없어서 저장탱크에 저장된 휘발유를 호스를 통해 입으로 빨아내서 급유하는 원시적인 것이었다. 한편, 해일리라는 사람은 뉴욕5번가에서 레스토랑을 경영하고 있었는데, 어느날 한 손님이 생맥주를 퍼올리는 펌프를 보고 휘발유도 그런 방식으로 퍼올리려서 주유하면 좋겠다는 이야기를 했다. 여기서 아이디어를 얻은 해일리는 자신의
레스토랑 앞에 펌프식 주유기를 만들어 설치했는데, 이것이 1906년의 일이었고, 주유기로서는 세계 최초였다.
1907년에는 스탠더드오일 오브 캘리포니아라는 회사가 워싱턴의 시애틀에 넓은 주차장과 지붕이 있는 주유소를 세웠고, 이로부터 5년 후인 1912년에는 테네시의 멤피스에 13개의 급유펌프와 여성용 화장실을 갖춘 주유소가 생겼다.
1913년에 걸프석유사는 운전자들이 손수 급유할 수 있는 셀프서비스 주유기를 만들어 설치했다. 
 

The world's first gas station was built in 1905 by an auto gasoline company in St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States. At the time, there were no tankers available, so it was red with a gasoline hose stored in a raw storage tank. Meanwhile, a man named Hailey was running a restaurant on Fifth Avenue in New York, and one day a customer saw a pump pumping up a beer and told him he wanted gasoline to pump the same way. Haley got the idea from here, and she decided to take her own idea.
A pump was built and installed in front of a restaurant in 1906, and it was the first pump in the world.
In 1907, a company called Standard Oil of California set up a gas station with a large parking lot and roof in Seattle, Washington. Five years later, in 1912, a gas station with 13 gas pumps and gas stations for women in Memphis, Tennessee.
In 1913, the Gulf Oil Company built and installed a self-service lubricator, which drivers could power themselves.
