1912년 미국 디트로이트 경찰이 세계 최초로 시속 96km로 달리는 로드스터를 경찰차로 사용했다. 영국의 런던 경찰도 1919년 패트롤카를 채택, 경찰서의 부서장이 타고 순찰했다. 일설에는 경찰이 자동차를 순찰차로 사용하기 시작한 것은 1903년 미국 보스턴경찰서였다고 한다. 그전에는 말이 끄는 마차를 순찰차로 사용했으나 속도가 빠른 교통질서 위반 자동차를 도저히 따라잡을 수 없어 자동차로 바꾸었다고 한다. 

In 1912, Detroit Police in the United States used the world's first 96 kilometers per hour roadster as a police car. London police also took a ride in 1919 to patrol the police department head. One theory is that it was the Boston Police Station in the United States that began using the car as a patrol car in 1903. Prior to that, cars were used as patrol cars with horse-drawn carriages, but they could not keep up with fast traffic violations and turned them into cars.
