우리나라에서 가장 긴 터널은 2001년 12월 14일 완전개통된 중앙고속도로상에 있는 죽령터널로 터널 길이가 4,520ｍ(높이 7.15ｍ, 폭 11.6ｍ)나 된다.
이 죽령터널은 충북 단양군 대강면 용부원리와 경북 영주시 풍기읍 수천리를 잇는 터널로 총 공사비가 2,088억원이 투입되었고 파낸 흙이 15t 트럭으로 6만7천여대분이나 된다고 한다.
다음으로 긴 터널은 영동성 신갈기점 127.12km 지점에 위치한 둔내 터널로 총연장 3,300m라고 한다.

현재 건설중인 터널중 밀양시 산내면 남명리와 울산시 울주군 상북면 덕현리를 연결하는 4.3km의 가지산 능동터널은 국도 24호선에 위치하며 2000년 7월 착공하여 2005년 6월쯤 준공할 예정이다. 이 터널이 완공되면 국내에서 두 번째로 긴 터널이 된다.
 

The longest tunnel in Korea is the Jungnyeong Tunnel, situated on the central highway that opened to traffic on Dec. 14, 2001, measuring 4,520 meters in length.
The tunnel connects Yongbuwon-ri in Danyang-gun, Chungbuk Province with Sucheon-ri, Punggi-eup, North Gyeongsang Province, costing around 258.8 billion won, and has been dug out with a 15-ton truck.
The next longest tunnel is Dunnae Tunnel, located 127.12km from the actual point of Sin-gal, Young-dong Province, which is 3,500m long.

Gajisan active tunnel, 4.6km long, which connects Nammyeong-ri, Sannae-myeon, Miryang-si to Deokhyeon-ri, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, Korea, is scheduled to be completed in July 2000. When the tunnel is completed, it will be the second longest tunnel in the nation.
