1770년 프랑스의 죠셉 퀴뇨가 만든 증기자동차

1770년 프랑스의 공병 대위였던,군사 기술자 죠셉 퀴뇨(Nicholas Joseph Cugnot)는 포차 (砲車)를 견인할 목적으로 증기기관을 동력으로 한 세계 최초의 3륜 증기 자동차(시속5km) 2종(대형,소형)을 제작 했다.
당시 육군사령관 이었던 스와솔공작은 참모들에게 이차를 시험토록 지시했는데,무거운 보일러와 2개의 실린더가 앞바퀴에 얹혀져 구동되어 조향하기 어려웠고, 보일러도 15분마다 물을 보충해야 했으며,브레이크 장치도 갖추지 않아 결국 대형의 것은 파리 교외의 언덕길에서 세우지 못하고 벽에 부딕혀 화재를 일으키므로서 제1호 교통사고를 내고 말았다.
퀴뇨의 시도는 프랑스 혁명에 의해 중지 되었으나, 전륜구동의 이 차가 오늘날 자동차의 시조인 셈이다. 현재 뮌헨 과학박물관에 소장되어 있다.

A steam car built by Joseph Quineau of 1770

In 1770, military engineer Captain Joseph Qugnot of France operated the world's first small three-wheeled steam engine (five kilometers per hour) to tow a gun.
As Army Commander in those days, Swassol ordered his staff to test the car, the heavy boiler and two cylinders were not able to drive against the front wheel, so they were unable to steer the boiler 15.
Quineau's attempt was stopped by the French Revolution, but the front-wheel drive car is the founder of today's cars. It is currently housed in the Munich Science Museum.
