우리나라의 주유소는 정확한 기록은 없지만 1910년대 후반무렵 서울 소공동 조선호텔 건너편에서 미국산 자동차를 팔던 테일러라는 미국인이 고객들을 위해 펌프식 주유기를 매장 안에 설치한 것이 최초라고 한다.
이후 1960년대 말까지 제대로 된 주유소가 없던 우리나라에는 1969년 고속도로가 개통되어 휴게소가 생기면서, 마침내 현대식 주유소가 생겨나기 시작했다.
 

Korean gas stations do not have exact records, but an American named Taylor, who sold American-made cars across from the Chosun Hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul, installed the first pump gas station for customers around the late 1910.
After no proper gas station was built in Korea until the late 1960s, when the nation's highways opened and rest areas opened, modern gas stations finally began to appear.
