우리나라 최초의 정비업은 미국사람이 시작했다.1915년부터 전직이 전차운전사였던 모리스가 서울 정동에다가 모리스상회라는 자동차 판매점을 열고 미국제 승용차를 들여다팔았는데 워낙 길이 험해 차가 잘 부서지는 것을 보고 자기가 판매한 자동차의 아프터서비스를 시작한 것이 한국 최초의 정비공장이었다. 모리스는 차가 점차 늘어나자 일거리가 많아져 자기 차 남의차 할 것 없이 닥치는 대로 고쳐 주어 짭잡한 재미를 보았으나 부속품을 전부 미국에서 들어오는 데 자그마치 4,5개월이 걸리는 데다가 부품값이 너무 비싸서 한 4년 하다가 손들고 말았다.
모리스가 정비업을 개업한 얼마 후 한국 젊은이 김상옥, 하상원씨 등이 이곳에서 기술을 배워 한국인 정비기술자가 탄생했다.
 

The first government service in our country was started by an American.Morris, a former tram driver since 1915, opened a car dealership in Jeong-dong, Seoul and sold an American-made car, but it was the first car to be sold by Korean manufacturers because it was so rough. Morris had a lot of work to do as he got more cars done, so he could repair everything he wanted, but it took him four or five months to get all the accessories back from America.
Shortly after Morris started his own business, young Korean men Kim Sang-ok and Ha Sang-won learned the art here, and a Korean repair technician was born.
