1920년 말 서울 인사동에 에가와라는 일본사람이 강천상회라는 조그만 공장을 세워 왕실의 자동차를 수리하면서 철판을 두드려 자동차 지붕을 만들어 씌워 주기 시작한 것이 자동차공장의 시초로 보고 있다. 이즈음 목수였던 일본인 구스모도가 강천상회사로부터 차체의 일부 부속제작을 하청받아 똑똑한 부인의 상술 덕분에 기반을 다졌다. 그는 당시 국내 자동차들이 부속품 구하기가 힘들어  쩔절매는 것을 보고 자동차부속상까지 차려 사업이 하였다 한다.
1931년 일본은 만주사변을 일으키고 한국에 있던 외국재산들을 몰수할 때 구스모도는 서울에서 가장 컸던 포드자동차의 한국대리점인 세루상회를 헐값으로 인수한 후 학부출신 사위의 도움으로 인현동에 대지 2천평을 구입하여 자동차 차체제작 겸 정비공장을 세웠다.  그는 일본 포드공장으로부터 엔진, 변속기, 핸들, 앞 뒤 차축이 달린 하체만 도입해 20인승과 30인승의 대형버스를 우리나라에서 처음 만들어 팔았다. 구스모도는 해방 전까지 주로 서울부영버스(서울시영버스) 관리업체였던 경성전기회사에 버스를 납품하였고, 2차대전이 발발하자 군용트럭과 민간용트럭까지 조립하여 큰 돈을 벌었다 한다.
 

A Japanese man named Egawa started to build a small factory in Insa-dong in Seoul in the late 1920s to repair a royal car and build a roof over an automobile by tapping iron plate. Japanese carpenter Kusmodo has recently subsidised some parts of the car body from Gangcheon Electric Company and established the foundation thanks to the detailed work of a smart woman. When he saw that Korean cars were unable to get accessories, he found it difficult to get them so he conducted a business even to set up shop as a sub-compensary.
When Japan set up a Manchurian Incident in 1931 to confiscate foreign assets in Korea, Gusmodo purchased a Korean dealership for the biggest Ford Motor Co. in Seoul, Seru, for a sale and bought an Inhyeon-dong son-in-law from a Korean carmaker.  He first built and sold buses with 20 and 30 seats in Korea with engines, transmissions, handles and a lower body with front and rear axles from a Japanese Ford factory. Gusmodo supplied buses to Gyeongseong Electric Company, a bus company that had been in charge of managing Booyoung Bus services in Seoul until the liberation of Korea, and built up a military truck and a commercial truck to make a fortune.
