1901년 시카고대학의 사진학교수였던 버트 홈즈는 세계여행도중 우리나라에 들렀는데 홈즈는 한강 구경을 위해 자동차 한 대를 빌려 타고 사진기를 차에 설치한 다음 마포로 향했다. 서대문을 막 빠져 나가다 마주오던 소 달구지를 피하지 못하고 그만 충돌하고 말았다. 소는 다치지 않았으나 수레는 망가져 바퀴가 빠져 버렸는데 이것이 우리나라에서 발생한 최초의 자동차 사고였다. 사고를 낸 자동차를 어디서 어떻게 구했는지에 대한 기록은 확인되지 않고 있다. 

In 1901, Bert Holmes, a photo school student at the University of Chicago, visited Korea on a trip to see the world when Holmes borrowed a car and installed a camera in a car to tour the Han River before heading to Mapo. Just as I was leaving Seodaemun, I couldn't avoid the cart I was facing, and I collided. The bull was not hurt, but the wagon broke and the wheels were pulled off, the first car accident in the nation. The record on where and how the accident was found has not been confirmed.
