우리나라의 최초의 고속도로는 경인고속도로로 1968년에 서울과 인천간 4차선 고속도로(29.5km)로 건설되었다.
이후 '70년 7월에 경부고속도로가 건설되면서 국가 전체적으로 엄청난 사회.경제적 변화를 초래하였다. 경부고속도로의 출현은 우선 여객수송면에서 도로가 철도에 비해 운행속도나 운행빈도, 운임면에서 비교우위 확보를 가능케 하였다. 또한 화물수송면에서는 공업화 진전에 따른 제조화물 증가와 포장도의 확충으로 화물수송에서 트럭운송이 경제성을 확보할 수 있게 되었다. 그리고 승용차의 대중화와 컨테이너를 비롯한 고가화물의 지속적 증가로 이같은 고속도로 중심의 수송구조는 더욱 강화되어 오늘에 이르고 있다.  

Korea's first motorway was the Gyeongin Expressway, which was built in 1968 with a four-lane motorway between Seoul and Incheon that took place.
The construction of the Kyungbu Expressway in July, 1970, resulted in a drastic social and economic change throughout the country. The appearance of the Kyung-bu Expressway allowed the road to secure a comparative advantage over the railroads in terms of passenger transport, frequency of operation, and capacity. In addition, the transport of freight could ensure economic feasibility as manufactured goods increased as industrialization progressed and the distribution of packing materials was expanded. And with the continued popularization of cars and the increase in expensive goods, including containers, the transportation structure of the highway center has become stronger and stronger.
