1903년 고종 황제 즉위 40주년에 미국 공관을 통해 포드 또는 캐딜락 승용차 1대를 칭경식 의전용 어차로 들여온 것이 우리나라 최초로 등장한 자동차였다지만 이에 대한 기록이나 자료는 없다.
하지만, 그 이전에도 우리나라에는 서양 외교관이나 기술자 또는 선교사들이 갖고 온 자동차가 있을 것으로 보인다.
그 중 하나로 보이는 차는 1901년 봄 미국 시카고대학의 사진학 교수이며 여행가였던 버튼 홈즈가 한강을 구경하러 가다가 소달구지를 들이받아 사고를 낸 차가 바로 그것이다.
고종에 이어 두 번째로 왕실에서 자가용을 탄 사람은 순종으로, 그의 1912년식 캐딜락 리무진은 고종의 차와 함께 보존되어 현재 복원중이다

However, even before that, the nation is likely to have a car brought by Western diplomats, engineers or missionaries.
One of them is the car that Burton Holmes, a professor of photography and traveler at the University of Chicago in the U.S., crashed into an ox cart on his way to the Han River in the spring of 1901.
The second person in the royal family who took a car after King Gojong was Sunjong, and his 1912 Cadillac limousine was preserved with King Gojong's car and is currently being restored
