1975년 12월 현대자동차는 국내 최초로 설계부터 생산까지 전과정을 국내 기술진에 의해 이루어낸 "포니"(국산화율 90%)
현대자동차는 포드와의 사업추진이 허사로 돌아가자 이탈리아 디자이너 쥬지아로에게 스타일링을 맡겨 한국형 승용차 "포니"의 개발에 성공하고 74년 10월 제55회 토리노 모터쇼에서 성공적으로 데뷔함으로서 국산 고유모델 시대를 열었다. 한국인의 취향과 체격, 그리고 도로사정에 맞는 경제형 차인데다가 내구성이 좋아 국민들로부터 인기를 끌었으며, 마이카 시대를 열어준 차였다. 포니가 나온 뒤 승용차 시장의 80% 정도였던 중형차는 밀려나고 소형차 시대가 열렸다.
포니는 1975년 12월 생산에 들어가 76년 2월 울산공장에서 첫 출고되었으며, 판매 첫해에 1만726대가 팔려나가 국내 승용차시장 점유율 43.6%를 차지하면서 단번에 최고 인기차로 떠올랐다.  그해 7월 국산승용차로선 처음으로 에콰도르에 5대가 수출됐다.
이렇게 시작된 포니 시리즈는 1984년 단일 차종으로서는 처음으로 50만대 생산을 돌파 하였으며, 1975년 12월~ 1985년 12월까지 293,936 (내수 226,549대, 수출 67,387대)가 생산되었다.
 

In December 1975, Hyundai Motor Co., the first Korean carmaker to produce a full range of processes from design to production, was called " Pony " (National Production Rate 90 %)
As the project with Ford ended in failure, Hyundai Motors had allowed its Italian designer Jusia to style its Korean car " Pony " to be developed and successfully launched its domestic model in October 1974 in Turin Motor Show. It is an economical car that fits Korean tastes, build, and road conditions, and it has been popular among the public for its durability and established Micah's era. After the Pony was released, medium and small cars, 80 percent of the car market were moved out of the market, and a small car market was opened.
Pony went into production in December 1975 and was first shipped from the Ulsan factory in February 1976. In its first year, 12,726 cars were sold, making it the biggest seller in the domestic car market, and made it the biggest seller at the first place.  Five Korean cars were exported to Ecuador in July of that year.
Started like this, the Pony series was the first single vehicle to reach 500,000 units in 1984 and was exported to 293,936 units between December 1975 and December 1985 (domestic demand 226,549 units).
