세계 최초의 4륜 구동 자동차는 1902년 폴란드에서 마차를 만들던 스파이커 형제에 의해 만들어졌다. 그당시 독일과 프랑스를 중심으로 산을 오르는 산악 자동차 경주가 유행하고 있었는데, 스파이커 형제는 높은 산을 빠르게 오르기 위해서는 두바퀴 굴림 방식의 차가 힘이 약하다는 것을 알고 1년의 연구 끝에 4륜 구동 자동차를 발명하여 1903년 프랑스에서 열렸던 경주에 출전해 우승을 했다. 이를 통해 유명해진 스파이커 형제는 다음 해에 5대의 4륜 구동 자동차를 만들어 관광과 여행용으로 판매했는데, 이 당시는 아스팔트 포장 도로가 없었던 시절이어서 험한 길을 달리는 데에 그만이었다고 한다.
1906년 이 소문을 들은 영국의 런던택시회사가 10대를 구입해 택시로 사용한 것이 결정적으로 호평을 받는 계기가 되었다. 1907년 역사상 처음으로 동서양을 달리는 16,000Km의 북경-파리 경주에서 스파이커는 4륜 구동차를 가지고 출전하여 3등을 했다. 1905년 미국의 기술자 월터 크리스티는 4륜 구동 방식을 스포츠카에 적용, 반더빌트트로피 레이스에서 1위를 한 것이 신문에 보도되어 자동차 기술자들을 놀라게 했다. 그후 제1차 세계대전 때는 포드가 4륜 구동 군용트럭을 대량 제작하여 전쟁에 쓰기 시작하면서 전투용 기동장비로 계속 개발되어 왔으나 완벽한 4륜 구동차가 나타난 것은 제2차 세계대전 때였다.

During World War I, Ford began mass production of four-wheel drive trucks and began to use them in warfare, and was continued to be developed as a combat maneuvering equipment, but the perfect four-wheel drive vehicle appeared in World War II.
