한국공업규격(KS)은 자동차의 종류에 관한 용어 규정에서 ①사용장소 ②구조 ③원동기 등으로 분류하고 있으며 세부적인 분류 내용은 다음과 같다.


(1) 사용되는 장소에 따른 분류    
 
  1) 도로상에서 사용되는 차량 (Road Vehicle)
     ① 모터 비이클 (Motor Vehicle)
     ② 트레일러 (Trailer)
     ③ 연결차량 (Combination of Vehicle)
     ④ 모페드 (Moped)
     ⑤ 모터사이클 (Motorcycle)

  2) 도로 이외에서 사용되는 차량 (Off-Road Vehicle)
     ① 산업차량 (Industrial Truck)
     ② 건설차량 (Construction Vehicle)
     ③ 농업차량 (Agricultural Vehicle)
     ④ 설상차량 (Snow Vehicle)
     ⑤ 레져카   (Leisure Car)

 
(2) 구조에 따른 분류

  1) 주행방식에 따른 구분
     ① 차륜 ②캐터필러 ③반캐터필러

  2) 차축 및 차륜수에 의한 구분
     : 2.3.4.6.다륜

  3) 구동륜에 따른 구분
     ① 전륜구동 (Font-Wheel-Drive Vehicle)
     ② 후륜구동 (Rear-Wheel-Drive Vehicle)
     ③ 총륜구동 (All-Wheel-Drive Vehicle : 4륜구동)

  4) 원동기의 위치에 따른 구분
     ① 프론트엔진자동차(Font Engine Vehicle)
     ② 리어엔진자동차(Rear Engine Vehicle)
     ③ 언더후로어엔진자동차(Underfloor Engine Vehicle)

  5) 프레임의 유무에 따른 구분
     ① 프레임 구조 자동차 (Vehicle with Frame Construction)
     ② 프레임 없는 자동차 (Vehicle with Intergral Chassis-Body Constuction)


(3) 원동기(原動機)에 따른 분류

  1) 가솔린 자동차 (Gasoline-Fueled Automobile)
  2) 디젤 자동차   (Diesel Powered Automobile)
  3) 가스 자동차   (Gaseous Fuel Automobile)
  4) 전기 자동차   (Electric Automobile)
  5) 가스터빈 자동차   (Gasturbine Automobile)
