우리나라 최초의 국산자동차.

1955년 8월 서울에서 정비업을 하던 최무성,혜성,순성씨 3형제가 미군으로 불하받은 지프의 엔진과 변속기,차축 등을 이용하여 드럼통을 펴서 만든 첫 지프형 승용차.
우리손으로 만든 첫 자동차인 시발은 2도어 4기통 1.323cc 엔진에 전진3단, 후진1단 트랜스미션을 얹었으며, 국산화율이 50%나 되어 긍지가 대단했으나, 한 대 만드는데 4개월이나 걸려, 시발차의 값이 8만환으로 사가는 사람은 별로 없었다.
그러다가 1955년 10월 광복 10주년을 기념하여 경복궁에서 열린 산업박람회때 최무성씨가 시발차를 출품하여 최우수 상품으로 선정됨과 동시에 대통령상을 수상함으로써 신문에 크게 보도되자 을지로 입구에 있던 그의 천막 공장에는 시발차를 사가려는 고객으로 문전성시를 이루었으며, 이로인해 가격도 하루 아침에 30만환으로 뛰어 올랐다.
대통령상을 받은후 한달도 못되어 1억환 이상의 계약금이 들어와 이 돈으로 공장도 사고 시설도 제대로 갖추어서 양산 체제로 돌입 했다.
특히 영업용 택시로 인기가 높아서 생산능력이 수요를 늘 못
따라갔다.  얼마후 시발 투기붕까지 일어나 상류층 부녀자들 사이에선 "시발계"까지 성행하여 프리미엄까지 얹어서 전매되는 사태까지 벌어졌다.
그러나 새로운 차 개발에 많은돈을 썼고 5.16혁명으로 정부 보조금이 끝난데다가 1962년 산뜻한 "새나라"자동차가 쏟아져 나오자 큰 타격을 입게 되었다.  이 차는 1963년 5월까지 3천여대를 만들어 시판했다.
